"Cultural & Diversity Capitals of the Americas"

A major goal of The Americas Encounter -500 Years® is to establish the “Cultural & Diversity Capitals of the Americas” following the successful model of the Cultural Capitals of Europe started in 1985

A mutual understanding of our cultures, our identities, is essential to achieve true European integration.” This assertion by Melina Mercouri, then Greek Minister of Culture, launched the system of the Cultural Capitals of Europe in 1985.

World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it,” said Robert Schuman on the “Declaration for a United Europe of May 9, 1950”

El Respeto al Derecho Ajeno es la Paz!” Benito Juarez

I need to have my friends close, but I must have my enemies closer! President Abraham Lincoln

“It is difficult, perhaps impossible to bring together the people of the Americas through political and economic treaties and agreements alone; a mutual understanding and acceptance of our cultures and diversity, of our identities and respect for one another is essential to achieve true integration of the Americas.” Victor Pinzon

Cities from the countries of the Americas and other parts of the world will be invited to apply to be selected as the “Cultural & Diversity Capitals of the Americas” each year starting in 2008 and thereafter.

One city form Latin America, a second from the United States and a third from other part of the world will be selected as the “Cultural & Diversity Capitals of the Americas.”

Under The Americas Encounter -500 Years®’ rules, guidance and support each selected city over the course of the one year will host a variety of cultural, artistic, sports, festivals, exhibitions, concerts, theatre, dance and many other events and activities bringing people together informing, educating and empowering them, thereby “Helping To Make a Better World for Us All!!”

Details of the program and process of the “Cultural & Diversity Capitals of the Americas” will be announced at the Launching of The Americas Encounter -500 Years®’ Press Conference and Reception at the US Capitol mid-November 2007.
