vip@theamericas.org Germany Issued Stamp in 2007 to Commemorate Martin Waldseemüller and America’s Birthday in 1507; United States and Latin American countries should do same
Washington, DC, October 15, 2007. The German government issued a stamp on April 17, 2007 to commemorate the German cartographer, Martin Waldseemüller, as the person who first named America in the World Map he produced in 1507, 500 years ago. Below is a copy of said stamp.
The map was printed on 12 panels which were to be assembled into a single map 8' by 4'6". The name "AMERICA" appears in the lower, left-hand panel on the stamp, in an area of today’s Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.
