The Case For Corporate Social
Responsibility
What makes International
Investments/markets successful these days? "What worked just a few decades ago
doesnt cut it any more. For too long the old pillage and plunder seemed
to work. Get in, take as much as you can, and get out."
Times are changing! Democratization, integration and global markets are changing
attitudes.
Corporate responsibility is a philosophy that should be important to every companys
stakeholder and deeply rooted in the heart and fabric of a company. Preferably, it should
start with the CEO.
When investing in a country or a
market, a company must look beyond its immediate needs if it plans to be part of the
landscape for the long run. Not only are customers vital, so are investors, employees, and
the communities where operations are based and products/services sold vendors, peers and
regulators. Some international investors and companies are being successful in integrating
social responsibility with operations and corporate profitability in Latin America. Still
much needs to be done.
Corporate Social Responsibility
makes financial sense. According to Bob Dunn of San Francisco-based Business for Social
Responsibility, global communications make accountability very fluid. What a firm
does in one place is rapidly known elsewhere. Furthermore, consumers want
to buy products/services from companies that care. In a U.S. study by the Walker
Group, 75% of respondents said they will not buy -regardless of the discount- from
a company they do not perceive to be socially responsible. (Source: U.S./LATIN
TRADE, July 1995.)

Hispanic markets important to your companys bottom line?

communities?
Is corporate social responsibility important to your company? What percentage of
your revenues is spent in this area?
The Americas Foundation,
