The Case For Corporate Social Responsibility

What makes International Investments/markets successful these days? "What worked just a few decades ago doesn’t cut it any more. For too long the old ‘pillage and plunder’ seemed to work. Get in, take as much as you can, and get out."
Times are changing! Democratization, integration and global markets are changing attitudes.
Corporate responsibility is a philosophy that should be important to every company’s stakeholder and deeply rooted in the heart and fabric of a company. Preferably, it should start with the CEO.

When investing in a country or a market, a company must look beyond its immediate needs if it plans to be part of the landscape for the long run. Not only are customers vital, so are investors, employees, and the communities where operations are based and products/services sold vendors, peers and regulators. Some international investors and companies are being successful in integrating social responsibility with operations and corporate profitability in Latin America. Still much needs to be done.

Corporate Social Responsibility makes financial sense. According to Bob Dunn of San Francisco-based Business for Social Responsibility, global communications make accountability very fluid. What a firm does in one place is rapidly known elsewhere. Furthermore, consumers want to buy products/services from companies that care. In a U.S. study by the Walker Group, 75% of respondents said they will not buy -regardless of the discount- from a company they do not perceive to be socially responsible. (Source: U.S./LATIN TRADE, July 1995.)

Basic Survey. We invite you to answer and offer your comments to the following questions:

• Are the Latin American and Hispanic markets important to your company’s bottom line?
• Please let us know what specifically have you done, and/or are you doing in terms of your corporate social responsibility in the Latin American and Hispanic markets and communities?
• Is corporate social responsibility important to your company? What percentage of your revenues is spent in this area?

The Americas Foundation, TAF, plans to periodically publish and widely distribute the answers or no answers we receive from the companies which we invite to offer their comments on the above corporate social responsibility survey.

La Casa de las Americas USA, TAFIEN, COTA, Speaker Series "The Economic and Political Importance of South and Central America to the US", Reforestation, Civil Society, FTAA support, Youth, the Hemispheric Congress of Tourism and other programs of The Americas Foundation are well planned, appropriate programs to provide your company the opportunity to demonstrate your corporate social responsibility to the Latin American and Hispanic markets and peoples. Our programs and events are designed to:

• Be outreach programs directed to the markets and communities which contribute substantially to the dynamic domestic and international economy.
• Contribute to create a synergy of great business, exchange, and innovative opportunities to all participants.
• Contribute to the effective growth and enhancement of education, tourism, travel, trade, investment and overall economic development of each participating country, our hemisphere, and the globe.
• Contribute to create education/employment/micro business equal opportunities, and thus a more rational income and wealth distribution for the peoples in our region.

Please enter your comments and suggestions. Thank you.
