Leaders and ethics

What leaders say about ethics is important. People should watch more closely and take to task their leaders. The more ethics are talked about, the stronger they will become. Talk is a starting point. People will or should watch the community’s leaders carefully and constantly to confirm that their behavior reflects what they say.

There are two key functions of leadership: set limits and give direction. Our leaders must set limits by taking concrete steps to eliminate corruption in government and business. Then setting direction by talking and developing comprehensive Code of Ethics to be adopted and implemented by everyone. And, the most significant component is that leaders become the ethical role models of the community at all time.

Paul Ransom, founder of the Adirondack School for Boys, wrote:

"The people in this world may be divided into three great classes, according to the attitude they hold to life. The people in the first class believe, or seem to believe, that hey were put into the world to see how much they can get out of it…

"The people of the second class is made up of those who do not give life any thought at all – who do not like to think very deeply of anything…

"The third class are people who believe that they are in the world not so much for what they can get out of it as for what they can put into it… They believe in work and are anxious to do their share of it. They do not shirk the great problems of life, but meet and solve them. It is to these people that the world is indebted for all the progress that has been made in the past, and to them it must look for all hope of progress in the future."

Paul Ransom went on to say to his prospective students that only if they sincerely wanted to be counted among the third class of people, would they be invited to attend his school.

Our leaders must clearly be those of the third class, who are prepared to meet and solve the great problems of life, including attacking and eliminating corruption and building a strong ethical community. When their talk is proven by their behavior, others will want to join them.

Victor Pinzon and The Americas Foundation, similarly as Paul Ransom, invite only those people of the third class to join the Foundation.
