-Sanchez In Race For Houston Mayor-

April 25, 2001. Orlando Sanchez joined the Houston mayor's race this week, then immediately attacked incumbent Mayor Lee Brown as a poor manager. Sanchez is a conservative Houston City Council member routinely at odds with Brown. If elected, Sanchez would be the city's first Hispanic mayor. Brown is expected to seek reelection.

Sanchez, 43, is a Cuban-American immigrant who moved to Houston in the early 1960s. Houston is one of six major cities nationwide that could elect a Hispanic mayor this year. In Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa is in a runoff against James Hahn. San Antonio's election May 5 includes Ed Garza. Hispanics are also running for mayor in Miami, New York and El Paso.
