Hispanic Americans -- A diverse people
Who are Hispanic
Americans?
Hispanic Americans come from 22
country of origin. They are of European, native American,
African, and mixed ancestry who share certain historical backgrounds and cultural
traditions --in particular, the Spanish language.
Hispanic and Latino
Hispanic is the term or label
officially given by the US Census to those individuals who speak Spanish or are
of Hispanic origin.
Latino is a term that a number of Hispanics prefer to use for their identity/
Hispanic Americans have diverse roots.
Hispanics are people whose ancestors, or who
themselves, came to the US from:
Mexico
Puerto Rico
Dominican Republic
Colombia
Cuba
Spain
Other South and Central American countries
Hispanics are the largest
minority in the US
Today in 2004 nearly 15 % of the US population is Hispanic. That's about 44 million people
Before 2050, one out of four US citizens will be a Hispanic.
The US is the 5th largest Spanish speaking nation in the world.
Why learn about or
outreach to Hispanic Americans?
Hispanics are a major market; their purchasing power in 2003 was about $800
million and growing
Hispanic Americans have and will continue contributing substantially to the US in many different ways
History
Spanish-speaking people
have lives in North America for over 500 years. They arrive much before the Mayflower
Pilgrims came to the US.
Politics
Hispanic Americans have
helped shape our laws and strengthen democracy. They have valiantly fought and
defended the US in almost every war.
Culture
Music, art, language
and cuisine in the US owe much to Hispanic-American influence.
Innumerable names of States, Counties, cities, towns, roads, streets carried Hispanic
names starting from the early 1500's.
