“Empowerment – Agents of Change” Internship and Leadership Developmentä Program (EACILD)
Americas Global Foundation
EACILD program has grown out of years of actual experience wrestling with problems common to minority communities in the U.S. and developing countries, where a lack of education, mentoring and empowerment continue to leave many without hope of a better future.  Experience has taught us that in providing young international and domestic students, as well as professionals and others, the opportunity to experience a "better way," teach them valuable skills, and provide them logistic support as they return to their communities and countries, unproductive and wasteful cultural and societal norms can change. Another most valuable feature of EACILD is that AGF offers this exceptional program in Washington, DC.

Accordingly, AGF seeks to bring to Washington DC groups of 10 or more selected, highly motivated students, government officials or professionals to participate in a series of different training and empowerment internship or workshops, wisely crafted to accommodate their particular needs, while adhering to special and flexible curriculums and agendas.  As much as possible, we want to keep these interns in-house, to ensure that they are not merely making photo copies to the benefit of others, but involved in significant research and work on issues relevant to them, while learning the democratic procedures of the US Government and other supporting entities from visits and exchanges with government officials and private sector executives. Arrangements will be made for some interns to work with specific Washington entities or government agencies, who wish to do so, and will be monitored and supported like the others who are in-house. A substantial amount of the intern's time will be given to reading, writing and discussing key concepts and skills we feel every future leader should be familiar with - a few being:  conflict resolution and listening skills, respect for yourself and others, a working knowledge of economics, writing an effective resume, developing good communication skills, learning to be proactive and think creatively, speed reading, personal investing, the responsibility of civic involvement, etc.    Interns will be required to keep a journal of their experiences, which will prove effective in providing material for frequently scheduled discussions and dialogues to provoke questions and encourage reflection of the topics at hand.  One of the most significant aspects of AGF's internship we feel to be the logistic support after the interns have returned to their places of origin, in helping them fulfill their professional goals and implement what they have learned, under often difficult conditions.  We intend to stress the value of networking, and encourage all interns to join our growing hemispheric and global network through the world-wide-web, so that they may continue dialoging with known and unknown colleagues of the
EACILD program as well as AGF members and staff, and find support in one another while enjoying unlimited synergy of opportunities.  We believe that in numerous instances, tools as basic as these are all many need to learn how to "fish" for themselves, break the cycle of dependency and become leaders, mentors and truly, "Agents of Change" in their communities and countries.

Why now?  September 11, 2001 highlighted the fact that many around the world do not perceive U.S. benevolence as such.  Now, after the war in Iraq, many are again questioning our intentions, undecided whether our foreign policy is imperialistic after all.  Under these circumstances, a program like EACILD, which endeavors to share our collective wealth of democratic experience, and mentor others in it, is one significant option in changing this perception.

“The benefits of this program will be felt by the people of their country, as well as by the people of the United States.” - Congressman Thomas Davis

Why AGF?  Realizing that there are several successful, credible internship agencies already in DC, why should you participate or be asked to support us?  This is a question we have asked ourselves numerous times, and believe the answer is important.  AGF will coordinate the entire internship experience, similar to our competitors, but believes the greater value to the intern will come in working with us directly rather than being passed off to another entity, plus our valuable logistic support we will provide our alumni after they go back to their cities or countries of origin.  While there is some value to menial clerical duties, we desire our interns to engage in much more significant questions and dialogue.  Our program has a very specific academic and practical component to it.  We have asked ourselves, and many professionals, what skills and ideas would have been most helpful to learn, in lending a true picture of the world, and have deliberately incorporated these concepts into our mentoring and leadership program.  Finally, as a foundation whose purpose is to reach out to minorities, and those who have been excluded by many, AGF has creatively designed and is uniquely qualified to implement a program that will mentor others in leadership and diversity, with solid content and wisdom, rather than just talk.
“The only thing for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edward Burke

Why Washington, DC?
The United States is today the prominent world's power, the best (not perfect) operating government, commercially and technologically the best and largest market in the world and, Washington, DC is its capital, the world's capital, the living heart of all of this activity -where major policy decisions are set and process and procedures take place impacting people worldwide. Additionally, Washington Metropolitan area is one of the world’s high-tech dynamic leading center. DC and its surrounding area is a unique cultural, scientific, tourism, government affairs, historic and medical hub, second to none.

    AGF offers through our exceptional
EACILD program a unique and valuable opportunity here. The knowledge, experience, and relationships that our alumni will gain and establish in Washington, DC will be with them for the rest of their lives. Our alumni will take back to their cities and countries of origin new concepts, procedures and a vision they may want to adapt or shape to their culture for their benefit, betterment and sustained growth of their communities and countries. The U.S. and the world will gain substantially as a result.

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen wrote to us: “As a former educator, I value learning through experience and applaud your efforts to engage young leaders in education. The unique experience that your program will provide to young people in our nation’s capitol is certain to be beneficial to them, and will open doors of grand opportunities. Programs like the Americas Global Foundation’s Agents of Change will enable enthusiastic students to, in return, give generously to their respective communities and become agents of change, indeed.”
